IUDs, Birth Control, and President Trump

February 21, 2017

Birth Control TrumpPresident Trump and birth control

A group of men gathered around a table discussing what women can do with their bodies? Just another typical day in Washington during the Trump administration. Since taking office, President Donald Trump has signed several executive orders that directly—and adversely—affect women’s health care.

While the Mexico City Policy bans federal funding for international health groups that also offer abortion, the repeal of the Affordable Care Act may mean birth control would no longer be covered by insurance here at home. And that affects every American woman of child-bearing age.

The goal of rolling back the Affordable Care Act is the creation of a free and open market. Which sounds great, right? Free and open means more choices for everyone. Not so fast. A free and open market also means minimal regulations on health care, ensuring that insurance companies can impose the rules and policies they wish. For instance, they may include lifetime caps on health care, exclude pre-existing conditions and decrease the availability of low- and no-cost birth control services. Not to mention the American people are still waiting to see a replacement plan and what changes it will bring. Tick tock, Congress, we’re waiting on you.

What does this mean for your birth control options?

With these newly signed executive orders, there will be more limits on the healthcare women receive. With the government possibly restricting birth control options, women need to take charge of their health now. Selecting long-term options for birth control while they are still available means women won’t require multiple doctor visits or pharmacy refills in the event things drastically change. While birth control pills and patches may continue to be an option, we recommend the IUD as a reliable, long-lasting form of birth control.

Intrauterine Devices (IUDs)

IUDs are T-shaped devices inserted into the uterus that prevent pregnancy. An IUD is a reversible form of long-term birth control and includes both hormonal and hormone-free options. There are several types of IUDs available with effectiveness lasting from three to 10 years. The longest-acting option, the Paragard IUD, is a small T-shaped IUD wrapped in copper wire and can work as emergency contraception immediately upon insertion. It can be left in place for up to 10 years.

Birth control is an important health care service that provides numerous benefits to women. It is important that women have access to affordable options to prevent pregnancy. None of the men sitting around President Trump’s desk should have a say in what a woman chooses to do with her body. Here at Innovative Express Care, we offer IUD placement quickly, discreetly and at affordable rates. We are an urgent care clinic and primary care practice here to provide all your health care needs.
