Dr. Khare: Four Things You Can Do to Prevent the Spread of COVID-19

April 06, 2020

prevent the spread of covid-19

By now, we all know that staying home is the single most important step you can take to limit the spread of COVID-19. Beyond that, what else should you be doing? Here are the four most important things I want people to do and know.

Understand that not having symptoms doesn’t mean you are healthy

You can feel perfectly well, yet be carrying the COVID-19 virus. Scientists studying this novel coronavirus have discovered that many people only get minor symptoms, which may be unknowingly attributed to the common cold or even seasonal allergies. Meanwhile, that person can be spreading COVID-19.

In addition, it takes 5-7 days for COVID-19 symptoms to appear after you are infected by the virus. This means that you are shedding the virus every place you go, and every person you come in contact with is now at risk.

Please think about others. Skip unnecessary trips out in public, resist the temptation to mingle with neighbors and hold off on all playdates with other kids. This includes allowing your kids to play at the park. It’s a hard time for all, but these measures must be taken in order to put an end to COVID-19.

Go out as little as possible

As a result of the above, please go out as little as possible. You may feel well, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t carrying the virus. Each interaction you have puts another person at risk. Ask yourself, do I need to go out or do I want to go out? It’s normal to be stir crazy and crave getting out in public as you used to, but it’s important to stay put in order to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Get by on the minimum

Most people are in the habit of going to the grocery store at least once a week, usually more. This is not the time to be doing that. Plan to get by with what you have to the extent that is possible. Your meals may be less gourmet, but you will be reducing your risk significantly by limiting your trips to the store. When you do go out, be brief. Don’t browse or shop for anything other than the essentials.

Wear a mask in public

If everyone wore a mask when in public, we could significantly decrease the spread of COVID-19. N95 masks are not recommended for the general public, as basic fabric masks will do. You can easily turn a bandana, scarf or T-shirt into a mask. Protect others and protect yourself. It will make a difference.
