The last few weeks have brought coughing, sneezing and achiness to our urgent care. The main diagnoses have been: COVID, influenza and strep. Symptoms of these three illnesses overlap, but treatment differs so it’s always helpful to come in, figure out what you have, and get the appropriate treatment so you can start feeling better.
COVID
The main symptoms of COVID are: fever/chills, sore throat, fatigue, headache, digestive issues, cough and loss of taste and smell. Depending on your individual medical history and factors like age and how sick you are, you may be prescribed Paxlovid to treat the COVID symptoms.
INFLUENZA
Yes, the flu is still going around! Symptoms are very similar to COVID with a sore throat, fatigue, fever, cough and muscle aches. Our providers will recommend appropriate treatment, which may include rest, over-the-counter medications to reduce your fever or relieve pain. And certain patients may need prescription medications such as Tamiflu.
STREP THROAT
It feels like every school is sending emails about strep throat right now. The main symptoms are a sore throat, white pustules or pus on the back of the throat, swollen lymph nodes, fever and a headache. Strep may be treated with antibiotics, as well as rest and staying hydrated.
