STD Testing in Chicago: When to Get Tested and What to Expect

You don’t need symptoms to need an STD test. Many sexually transmitted infections have no noticeable signs, making testing an important part of caring for your health—and your partner’s.

Whether you have a new partner, a possible exposure or questions about your sexual health, Innovative Care offers STD screening, testing and treatment in Chicago in a respectful, private setting. Let’s go through some common questions.

STD vs. STI: What’s the Difference?

STI stands for sexually transmitted infection. STD stands for sexually transmitted disease. You’ll often see both terms used when searching for testing and care. An infection can be present even when it hasn’t caused symptoms.

When Should You Get Tested for STDs?

Talk with a healthcare provider about testing if:

  • You have a new partner or multiple partners.
  • A partner has tested positive for an STI.
  • You have symptoms or concerns about a possible exposure.
  • You’re unsure when you were last screened.

There is no single testing schedule that fits everyone. Your age, sexual history, symptoms and type of exposure help determine which tests you need and how often. For example, CDC recommends annual chlamydia and gonorrhea screening for sexually active women younger than 25 and for women 25 and older with certain risk factors.

Can You Get STD Testing at Urgent Care?

Yes. Innovative Care provides STD testing at its Chicago urgent care clinic, located at 2400 N. Ashland Ave. The clinic is open seven days a week, with online appointments and walk-ins available.

Testing services include chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, and herpes testing when symptoms are present. Your provider will help determine which tests are appropriate.

Herpes testing is not automatically part of every screening. CDC generally does not recommend routine herpes blood testing for people without symptoms because of test limitations and the possibility of false-positive results.

What Happens During an STD Testing Visit?

Your visit starts with a conversation about your symptoms, recent exposures and concerns. These questions help your provider choose the right tests.

At Innovative Care, chlamydia and gonorrhea testing can involve a urine sample, while HIV, syphilis and hepatitis testing involve a blood draw. An examination may be recommended based on your symptoms.

If you’ve had oral or anal sex, mention it: throat or rectal testing may also be appropriate.

How Soon After an Exposure Should You Get Tested?

Contact a provider for guidance rather than choosing a testing date on your own. Tell them when the exposure occurred and whether you have symptoms.

Timing matters. For example, no HIV test can detect infection immediately after exposure. Different HIV tests have different detection windows, and an early negative result may require repeat testing.

Does Insurance Cover STD Testing?

Innovative Care accepts most commercial insurance plans and offers self-pay options for STD testing. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs can vary, so confirm your benefits and the cost of recommended tests before your visit.
