Urgent Care Update: Flu Activity Rising Across Chicago

January 05, 2026

Influenza cases are increasing at Innovative Express Care, and knowing what to watch for matters. Understanding the symptoms, knowing how to prevent infection, and taking quick action when you’re sick can make a major difference in how you recover.

Here’s what to watch for—and how to protect yourself and your family this season.

Common Symptoms of Influenza

Influenza often comes on suddenly and tends to feel more intense than a common cold. Symptoms can include:

  • Fever

  • Cough

  • Sore throat

  • Runny or stuffy nose

  • Body aches

  • Headaches

  • Fatigue

If symptoms escalate quickly or feel more severe than usual, it may be influenza and not a typical viral cold.

How to Protect Yourself

The flu vaccine remains the best way to prevent severe illness. If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, now is the time. In addition:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick

  • Wear a mask in crowded indoor settings, including public transportation

  • Clean high-touch surfaces regularly

If You Get Sick: What To Do Next

If you think you may have influenza—or you’ve been exposed to someone with the flu—come to Innovative Care right away for testing. Early diagnosis matters because:

  • Influenza is different from a cold

  • Antiviral medications can help, but only when started within 48 hours

  • Knowing what virus you have helps guide treatment and return-to-activity decisions

While You’re Sick:

  • Stay home and away from others

  • Wear a mask if you must go out

  • Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing

  • Wash your hands frequently

  • Rest, hydrate, and follow your clinician’s instructions

When You Can Return to Normal Activities

You’re safe to resume regular activities when:

  1. Your symptoms are clearly improving AND

  2. You are fever-free for at least 24 hours without taking fever-reducing medication
