Meet Farah Ahmed, Preventive Care, Women’s Health and Primary Care Specialist in Chicago

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?

I grew up in Saudi Arabia, where I saw firsthand how limited access to women’s healthcare could profoundly impact people’s lives. I always loved science and learning, but it wasn’t until I joined a medical mission trip to Jordan in 2005 that I discovered my passion for medicine. The experience gave me a sense of purpose unlike anything I’d felt before. I applied to medical school in Dubai—without telling my parents—was accepted, and later moved to the United States on my own in 2008 to continue my journey. Looking back, every step led me to where I am today.

Q: What is your approach to patient care?

First and foremost: listen. I believe patients often tell us exactly what we need to know if we take the time to truly hear them. I encourage open conversations, ask thoughtful questions, and make sure patients feel empowered to be active participants in their care. I also believe mental health, past experiences, and emotional well-being are deeply connected to physical health and deserve to be part of every conversation.

Q: What areas of health do you specialize in?

My clinical interests include women’s health, trauma-informed care, preventive medicine, and psychedelic medicine. I’m passionate about helping patients understand what’s normal, what’s not, and how healthy habits—like nutrition, sleep, movement, social connection, and yes, even having fun—play a vital role in long-term health.

Q: How do you want patients to feel after they see you?

Heard.

Q: How do you stay current and continue learning?

I’m a lifelong learner and read two to three books each week. I also stay current through medical journals, journal subscriptions, UpToDate, and continuing education to ensure I’m providing evidence-based, up-to-date care.

Q: What is one fact people would be surprised to learn about you?

I’ve lived a very nontraditional life and have a wide range of interests. I love painting with acrylics, British period dramas (Downton Abbey is my favorite), and classic literature—especially Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. I’m also a huge Harry Potter fan, enjoy tasting menus, and recently attended my first Burning Man, which was a life-changing experience.

Q: If you weren’t in medicine, what would you be doing?

I’d probably be a journalist…or, if we’re being completely honest, a cast member on Mob Wives!
