Meet Jamie Hitro, Preventive Medicine & Medical Weight Loss Provider in Chicago
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?
Throughout school, I was always a math and science person but didn’t know what to do with those skills. After college, I volunteered and worked at an organization that helped survivors of domestic violence and another non-profit that cared for those receiving hospice and palliative care. Working with those clients and patients showed me the importance of advocacy within healthcare for oneself and for your health in all aspects of your life.
Q: What is your approach to patient care?
Patients are the experts of their bodies and experiences, while I can be a resource to data and evidence-based medicine. Together, we can work to find the best decisions to improve your health and quality of life. Come to me with your questions and topics you hear people talking about, and we can address what we have data on, what potentially could help, and what stems from misinformation.
Q: What areas of health do you specialize in?
I specialize in preventive care, women’s health, weight management, medical weight loss and metabolic health. I’m always open to learning new things!
Q: How do you want patients to feel after they see you?
My goal is for patients to feel listened to, and like there is a plan to address their concerns even if we don’t have the answer today.
Q: How do you stay current and continue learning?
I’m constantly reviewing the latest trials and findings through professional organizations. The most important tool is working with my colleagues to tap into our collective knowledge since team-based care improves quality of patient-care.
Q: What is one fact people would be surprised to learn about you?
I was an ice hockey goalie throughout my childhood into my early adult years.
Q: If you weren’t in medicine, what would you be doing?
I would be your favorite science teacher.
