Meet Katie Washagan, PA, Preventive Health, Primary Care and Weight Loss Specialist in Chicago

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?
During college, my own primary care physician assistant inspired me to pursue medicine. I saw the impact she made on her patients’ lives and health goals, and it drew me to primary care.

Q: What is your approach to patient care?
I take a comprehensive approach tailored to each patient. I consider both physical and emotional well-being when developing a care plan, because both matter to a person’s health.

Q: What areas of health do you specialize in?
Lately, I’ve especially enjoyed helping patients with weight management. Medication can be one tool, but I focus on nutrition and fitness to support safe, healthy progress. It’s rewarding to see patients build confidence as they work toward their goals.

Q: How do you want patients to feel after they see you?
I want patients to feel that someone is in their corner and that they can talk openly with me without fear of judgment.

Q: How do you stay current and continue learning?
I regularly read medical journals and use resources such as PubMed and UpToDate to stay current.

Q: What is one fact people would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m ambidextrous! I can do most things with either hand. It came in handy during my surgical rotations in PA school and when I played softball as a kid.

Q: If you weren’t in medicine, what would you be doing?
I’d probably be a fitness instructor. I love staying active, and my current favorite workout is Lagree.
