Meet Katie Washagan, Preventive Care and Primary Care Specialist in Chicago
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?
My own primary care physician assistant inspired me during college. Seeing the impact she had on her patients’ lives and health goals motivated me to pursue a career in medicine, specifically primary care.
Q: What is your approach to patient care?
I take a comprehensive, holistic approach tailored to each patient’s unique needs. I consider both physical and emotional well-being when developing care plans, with the goal of finding an approach that works for each individual.
Q: What areas of health do you specialize in?
I particularly enjoy weight management. While medications can be a helpful tool, my focus is on nutrition and fitness to support safe, healthy, sustainable progress. It’s rewarding to see patients transform their lives and build confidence over time.
Q: How do you want patients to feel after they see you?
I want patients to feel like they have someone on their team and in their corner. My goal is to create a judgment-free environment where they feel comfortable discussing their health, asking questions, and working toward their goals.
Q: How do you stay current and continue learning?
I stay current by reviewing research through PubMed, using clinical resources like UpToDate, and regularly reading medical journals to keep up with new evidence and developments in patient care.
Q: What is one fact people would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m ambidextrous—I can do most things with either hand! It came in handy during my PA school surgical rotations and when I played softball as a kid.
Q: If you weren’t in medicine, what would you be doing?
Probably working as a fitness instructor! I love staying active, and my current favorite workout is Lagree.
