Preventive health + primary care
Meet Tania Abraham, Preventive Care and Primary Care Specialist in Chicago
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?
I’ve always believed that health is one of the most powerful determinants of a person’s quality of life. Medicine allows me to empower patients to take charge of their health while helping guide decisions so they can live their best lives. I genuinely enjoy the continuous learning that comes with medicine. It’s always evolving, which keeps me curious, challenged, and constantly growing.
Q: What is your approach to patient care?
My approach is to listen first, then build a plan together. Everyone experiences health concerns differently, so I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. I like to make sure patients feel comfortable, understood, and informed so they can take an active role in their care.
Q: What areas of health do you specialize in?
I’m especially passionate about preventive care, which I see as the foundation of primary care. Staying up to date on screenings and addressing risk factors early can make a meaningful difference in long-term health. I’m also passionate about supporting women in having the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their bodies and health. Mental health is another area that’s very important to me, and I want to ensure patients have access to the support and resources they need. Providing inclusive, compassionate care for individuals of all backgrounds and identities is my goal.
Q: How do you want patients to feel after they see you?
I want patients to leave feeling heard, informed, and empowered. My goal is for them to feel confident that their concerns were taken seriously and that we’ve made decisions together as a team.
Q: How do you stay current and continue learning?
I stay up to date by attending conferences, listening to medical podcasts during my walks and commutes, and engaging with ongoing education in the clinic. I also appreciate learning about new treatments and medications so I can make well-informed recommendations and ensure I’m providing the best care possible.
Q: What is one fact people would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m originally from Houston, Texas, and I worked as a NICU nurse for six years before becoming a Nurse Practitioner. My background in nursing has shaped the way I practice today. It has instilled a strong foundation of empathy, compassion, and a holistic approach to patient care.
Q: If you weren’t in medicine, what would you be doing?
I’d be traveling, exploring different cultures, trying new food, and spending as much time in nature as I can. I also really love catching sunsets in different parts of the world!
