Meet Julia SanGiovanni, Primary Care and Women’s Health Specialist in Chicago
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?
My Nana worked as an operating room nurse for many years and truly loved caring for patients. Watching her dedication to healthcare and the impact she had on others inspired me to pursue a career in medicine.
Q: What is your approach to patient care?
My approach to care is patient-centered and collaborative. I believe patients should feel informed, supported, and involved in decisions about their health and treatment plans. Building trust and open communication is an important part of providing effective medical care.
Q: What areas of health do you specialize in?
My clinical interests include primary care, preventive care, chronic disease management, and women’s health, including obstetrics and gynecology. I enjoy helping patients manage both short-term and long-term health concerns while focusing on prevention and overall wellness.
Q: How do you want patients to feel after they see you?
I want patients to feel heard, respected, and comfortable coming to me with any health concern, including mental health. My goal is for patients to leave appointments feeling supported, informed, and confident in their care plan.
Q: How do you stay current and continue learning?
I stay current through continuing medical education resources like Hippo Education podcasts, UpToDate, OpenEvidence, and ongoing collaboration with colleagues. I believe asking questions and continuing to learn are essential parts of providing high-quality patient care.
Q: What is one fact people would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m a big fan of video games, especially Stardew Valley, Pokémon, Spider-Man, God of War, and Split Fiction.
Q: If you weren’t in medicine, what would you be doing?
I’d probably be making ravioli in Italy — which is still my retirement plan.
